Strategic Alliances

Institute for Analytical Philately, Inc. (IAP) has created a Basic Alliance Agreement

Note: Terms and Conditions of the Alliance Agreement are subject to change. Contact IAP for additional details.

IAP's strength lies in its Strategic Alliances and Centers of Excellence and the synergy that they bring to philatelic research. Current Alliance Members are:

National Postal Museum
National Postal Museum, Washington, DC

The National Postal Museum (NPM) houses a laboratory with a unique combination of equipment for the analytical or forensic study of philatelic materials. Analytical philately is the study of the materials that make up the objects (papers, inks, pigments, gums, etc.) through the use of scientific and engineering tools, such as elemental and molecular analysis, microscopy and different light wavelengths, or through mathematical and statistical study. Such techniques go beyond what the human senses can register and allow characteristics and components of philatelic materials to be found, identified and examined. Such characteristics and components include a wide range of things from watermarks to plate flaws, and from color differences to the molecular breakdown of paper.

There is a tour the NPM's Forensic Lab.

The Philatelic Foundation
The Philatelic Foundation, New York, NY

The Philatelic Foundation was granted a charter in 1945 by the University of the State of New York as a Nonprofit Educational Institution. Over the decades the Philatelic Foundation has come to be recognized as the central source for expertizing in U.S. philately.

IAP researchers may arrange for access to the PF's reference collection which is among the finest assemblages of philatelic material in the world. In addition, to a wonderful library, they have photos of each of the over 400,000 items that have been certified over the years.

Robert Rose, Chairman of the PF, writes on their web site, "Last month the PF entered into an alliance with the Institute For Analytical Philately, ... The alliance will leverage our 65 years of experience in expertizing philatelic items and our unparalleled reference collection with the IAP's plan to fund scientific research on philatelic problems... I believe that this alliance will help philately enter the 21st Century with the application of sound science to our hobby. Larry Lyons, Executive Director, will sit on the Advisory Board of the IAP..."

The U.S. Philatelic Classics Society, Inc.
The U.S. Philatelic Classics Society, Inc.

IAP President John Barwis addressed the Board of Directors of the U.S. Philatelic Classics Society resulting in the completion of an Alliance Agreement with the USPCS.

Formed more than 60 years ago, the USPCS has a simple credo prominently placed on their web site, "We emphasize the need to share the results of our studies and research with fellow students and collectors. But most of all, we are here to promote enjoyment and fun from a hobby that has given us many hours of pleasure."

John is excited that "this agreement opens the possibility of funding larger, even more important research on U.S. Classic issues through the possibility of cost-sharing between our two organizations."

The Confederate Stamp Alliance
Civil War Philatelic Society (CWPS)

We are pleased to announce that an Alliance agreement has been completed with the Civil War Philatelic Society (CWPS). David Herendeen, Past President, notes "This alliance with CWPS will provide additional research opportunities in an area rich with possibilities."

Founded in 1935 as the Confederate Stamp Alliance, the Civil War Philatelic Society (Society) remains a non-profit, non-sectional and non-political organization for fellowship, research and cooperation among members of an avid group of hundreds of collectors worldwide of Civil War stamps, covers and postal history.

At the 75th Anniversary Meeting of the CWPS in August 2010 the Trustees voted to enter into an alliance with the Institute of Analytical Philately for the purpose of sharing in the development of analytical tools that will aid in the examination of philatelic items.

The Chairman of the CWPS Authentication Service, Frank Crown, will serve on the Advisory Committee of the Institute of Analytical Philately as the CWPS representative.

The files of the Authentication Service will be available to Institute of Analytical Philately researchers.

The Vincent Graves Greene Philatelic Research Foundation
The Vincent Graves Greene Philatelic Research Foundation

The Vincent Graves Greene Philatelic Research Foundation was established in 1975. The initial funding of the Foundation consisted of a series of gifts made to the Foundation by Vincent Graves Greene.

It is expected that these funds will be augmented by gifts from individuals or organizations who are interested in furthering the purposes of the Foundation.

The Foundation bears the name of Vincent Graves Greene who was considered to be the Dean of Canadian Philatelists. He was a signatory of the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists; a recipient of the Lichtenstein Award; and a Fellow of both the Royal Philatelic Society, London and the Royal Philatelic Society of Canada. He served on many international juries and made significant contributions to all areas of philately.

The Foundation is incorporated and registered as a charitable organization for Canadian tax purposes.

Ted Nixon, Executive Director, will sit on the Advisory Board of the IAP.
